Denominations

New Hampshire, like most states, is home to many denominations of the Christian faith. The largest denomination by number of churches in New Hampshire is Catholicism. New Hampshire also has a sizeable representation of various protestant denominations including Pentecostal, Baptist, Church of Christ, Non-Denominational, and many other denominations.

Anabaptism

Anabaptism in New Hampshire appears to be rare, although there are some churches which call themselves Mennonite, a type of Anabaptism. There seems to have been a recent attempt to build a Mennonite school in 2018. Many Anabaptists in New Hampshire meet and worship in their homes rather than in a church.

Mennonite Conference USA

The largest American Anabaptist denomination, the Mennonite Conference USA, has no churches in New Hampshire (the closest are located in Vermont). The Mennonite Conference USA is a progressive church, officiating gay marriages.

Other Mennonites

There is one unaffiliated Mennonite church located in Charlestown New Hampshire. It may or may not also serve as a school for plain Mennonite children. It is a small church with no website. It is likely to be much more conservative, as it is a 'plain' school and church.

Anglicanism

Generally, Anglicans in the US fall under the Episcopal Church. However, some denominations use the term while having split from the Episcopal Church in the US.

Episcopal Church

The Episcopal Church is the US branch of the Church of England. This denominations churches are numerous throughout New England, and New Hampshire is no different, with over 60. It is one of the major historical churches which sociologists group into the "Mainline" churches, and is generally a progressive church. The Episcopal Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America also share pastors. The Episcopal Church is a very progressive denomination, with self-identification of 31% conservative, 29% liberal, and 37% moderate; additionally, this composition has become slightly more conservative in recent years. The party composition is 49% democratic and 39% republican, with a slight drop in support for republicans in recent years. Support for acceptance of homosexuality, progressive welfare policy, and abortion, are 83%, 55%, and 79% respectively.

Just recently, the church as a whole also announced support for transitioning children of any age, signifying an even larger shift toward woke positions.

Catholicism is one of the most abundant churches in New Hampshire, with over 110 locations according to the Diocese of Manchester. Ideological self-identification stands at 37% conservative, 36% moderate, and 22% liberal and 37% identify as republicans while 44% identify as democrats; additionally, this composition has become more liberal-identifying in recent years. Catholic laity (non-clergy) are split evenly on welfare policy and abortion, but heavily in favor of accepting homosexuality at 70%.

Saint Anselm Abbey

There is one Catholic Monastic Facility in New Hampshire: the Saint Anselm Abbey, located in Goffstown. It is located on the same property as the Saint Anselm College, a Catholic University. In recent years, the monks at the Abbey have been deprived by the state of some of their abilities to run their college and have expressed concern that the University will lose it's Catholic Identity.

Congregationalism

Congregationalism is a group that, along with the Presbyterians, descend from the Puritans and Pilgrims of New England. For most of its history, Congregationalism was represented in the North American Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC), until they merged with the United Church of Christ (UCC). In the wake of this merge, two denominations split from the NACCC. The NACCC is considered a mainline denomination, although it was one of the latest to form and one of the shortest lived as it was absorbed into the UCC.

National Association of Congregational Christian Churches

The National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC) split from the North American Congregational Christian Churches (also NACCC). The split was over issues of congregational concern, such as local autonomy and leaving people behind. It is a highly decentralized denomination, in which each congregation may set most of their own rules and, to an extent, define doctrine or theology. They have 7 churches in New Hampshire.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has 13 churches in New Hampshire. Judeo-Christian Messianic Ministries

Judeo-Christian Messianic assemblies seek to return to the Jewish roots of the faith in the Messiah Yeshua (Christ Jesus) through the Hebraic understanding of Scripture. Members strictly adhere to the divinely inspired Holy Scripture as God’s Holy Word for us to live by. United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church (UMC) has many churches in New Hampshire. New Hampshire makes up the 'Granite District' of the New England Conference of the UMC. It is one of the historical mainline churches. While it is a very progressive church in the United States, there is local variability in the degree of progressivism. Most of the conservatives in the UMC come from African and Asian nations, so in practice the US-based UMC churches are extremely progressive despite the more moderate position of the denomination as a whole. Ideological self-identification among members of the UMC stands at 45% conservative, 38% moderate, and 15% liberal. Support for abortion, progressive welfare policy, and homosexuality are at 58%, 41%, and 60% among UMC members. The denomination has undergone recent splits due to progressive theological and political issues.

Presbyterianism refers to a set of reformed denominations that have historically elected their church elders to decide and rule on church matters. The largest is the Presbyterian Church USA, with smaller groups breaking off from it over the years.

Presbyterian Church USA

Presbyterianism is a denomination descended from many of the Pilgrims and Puritans. There are 10 such churches in New Hampshire. The PCUSA is a progressive denomination and it is one of the denominations under the "mainline" label. Ideological self-identification stands at 40% conservative, 22% liberal, and 36% moderate; additionally, this composition has become more polarized in recent years. Despite the denomination's higher percent of conservative identification, support for acceptance of homosexuality, progressive welfare policy, and abortion, are 65%, 56%, and 65% respectively.

Quakerism

Quakerism, originally referred to as the Religious Society of Friends, is a form of Protestantism that is known for being highly pacifist, often to the point of refusing self-defense. They have several large denominations representing the same ideological splits that the rest of the Christian Protestant churches tend to have. Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, despite being known as a charity, is an actual denomination. Other Groups

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

There are 21 LDS congregations in three stakes in New Hampshire with approximately 9,000 members. Services are held in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. There are a small number of additional wards and branches whose borders reach inside New Hampshire but which meet in neighboring states. The state is in the Boston, Massachusetts Temple district. The temple and distribution center is located in Belmont, 40 miles South of the state border, roughly 50 minutes from Manchester. In addition, the church owns Zion's Recreation Camp on the shore of Onway Lake in Raymond, New Hampshire.

The entire state is located within the New Hampshire Manchester Mission, which besides New Hampshire, includes most of Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont as well as small parts of Connecticut and New York.

Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah's Witnesses are a group that uses a modified theology that was originally based in Christianity. An important distinction is the rejection of the deity of Christ, thereby rejecting the Trinity. They have Kingdom Halls (their churches) all over New Hampshire and around 3,500 members in the state. They do not have individual websites for each Hall.

Among Jehovah's Witnesses, ideological identification is 16% conservative, 12% moderate, 5% liberal. The other 67% do not classify themselves ideologically. Support for abortion, progressive welfare policy, and homosexuality among Jehovah's Witnesses are recorded at 11%, 59% and 9%, making it one of the most socially conservative and fiscally progressive religious groups.

Christian Science

Christian Science is a small group with 12 churches & societies in New Hampshire. This denomination is mostly known for healing based on prayer to God. Additionally, Christian Science Reading Rooms provide a quiet place, open to the public, for spiritual study as well as offering Bibles and Christian Science literature for sale. While Christian Science does recognize the divinity of Jesus Christ as the Son of God, they reject the deity of Jesus and the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.

• Who created this list? What is the intent behind it?

This list was created by a Christian member of the Free State Project who wanted to share information about churches to the thousands of libertarians moving to New Hampshire for liberty, some of which are Christian. This list and its details are intended to allow a mover to more easily maintain their faith tradition/denomination and practices through the process of moving.

• Why isn't my denomination or group included on this list?

• What about Unitarian Universalism? Doesn't it come from Christian denominations?

Originally, it did come from Christian denominations; however, today Unitarian Universalism is a universalist faith. They believe that all scriptures have pieces of the truth and therefore can't be said to be much more Christian than Muslim, Jewish, etc. Unitarian Universalism should be its own page if there is demand.

• Why were notes included about certain churches' "wokeness" or "basedness"?

Churches have diverging views on how they should approach the interaction of social issues and the politicized presence they play in our culture. The notes are to inform Christian movers and help match them with a church that matches their preexisting views. Some will take "wokeness" in a church as an indication that the church is compromising on its faith for political clout or to bend to cultural pressure while others will see it as the church adapting its principles to fit with the times.

• Do libertarians hate LGTB people?

Libertarians, like any other group, will have a diversity of views and opinions. Many libertarians are themselves LGBT. The first Libertarian presidential nominee, John Hospers in 1972, was openly gay.

• What about libertarian Christians?

Like any other group, libertarian Christians will have a diversity of views and opinions. We generally believe that a church should be kind and loving to LGBT attendees and help minister them, like any other group, to come to Christ and be saved.

• Is this page white supremacist?

No. The term "race" appears nowhere on this page.

• Does this wiki target churches?

No. The churches are listed in order to help match Christian libertarian movers with a church that matches their views. On top of noting "woke" or "based" churches, we have also noted those churches with recent scandals (for the sake of the safety of our fellow man).

• Why are they lying about what this wiki is?

It benefits those who wish to subvert Christianity by lying about this page. Christian libertarians who take their faith seriously are the exact opposite of the kind of person that they want living in New Hampshire.

• What about the New Hampshire Council of Churches? Haven't they condemned this page?

The NH Council of Churches is represented by a few individuals from a few churches from the most progressive denominations in the country, including a non-Christian religious denomination. Many of the churches in these individuals' own denominations do not even agree with them. Even if they represented every church in their denomination, they wouldn't have more than one third of the Christian Churches in the state being represented. Given the dissent within denominations, its more likely that the NH Council of Churches does not represent more than 20% of the Christian community in New Hampshire.

Matthew 5:44 reminds us to love our enemies and forgive those who've transgressed against us. As Christians, all of us would do well to pray for one another, including for the individuals in the NH Council of Churches who slander us.
